Our Story        Travis Pointe Waterfront events and vacations on Lake Norman NC Front Gate Private waterfront venue

Travis Pointe has always been filled with music, laughter and love, so our most recent incarnation as an event venue is a natural extension of our storied history of gracious hospitality.

Our story begins with A Tale of Two Travis’s -- Travis Stewart, and Travis Stewart. They were mother and daughter, each other’s closest neighbor, and known to all as Travis Senior and Travis Junior.

Cherry Chickering's 100th Birthday Party

Travis Stewart, the Original, Senior, or Mama Trav, as she was known to many, was the extraordinary woman who discovered this property in1979. With her beloved husband, Watson, and family in tow, she orchestrated the move from their small farm south of Charlotte to the Lake Norman waterfront in Mooresville, NC. The area was largely unknown and considered remote at that time, but Travis was a visionary with an indomitable spirit and huge loving heart. She always said Travis Pointe was the place to “let your soul catch up with your body.”

An accomplished musician and entertainer, she grew up in Charlotte, earned a degree in music and later taught at Queens College (now University). Always eager to play and sing anywhere her gift could create a glow, she played for churches, children, social and charitable groups and, of course, here at Travis Pointe.

As much as she loved music, Travis also had a passion for well-loved, unique, and storied furnishings. She spent hours driving country roads to nowhere in hopes of meeting a new friend with a good story to share about the perfect old pine table. On one such wandering, she found a piano leg in an antiques barn, beautifully made by a craftsman’s hand, but distressed with neglect. She asked if there were any other parts. After much digging, the other legs and, finally, the body of a grand piano were found leaning up against a back wall. It was her dream piano, an 80-year-old Chickering made of solid cherry wood. Travis had a vision!

Travis and Bob's Legendary Waterfront Wedding Celebration

Travis Pointe’s current caretakers, Bob Nulton and Travis Stewart (the Junior version), came together in 1995 on a trip to Cancun with mutual friends. That introduction started what would become a lifelong, fun-filled, loving partnership that would weather the winds of change and grow as strong and beautiful as the poplars by our Lake Norman waterfront. It would also be the cause for one of the most legendary wedding celebrations held at the Travis Pointe Event House and Grounds.

Both creative and independent souls, Bob and Travis quickly realized they had found the one person they could not live without. After a short courtship with the same mutual friends watching in wonder, the love-struck couple knew that a wedding was needed. After getting the okay from Travis Senior, Bob planned his romantically whimsical proposal at the couple’s favorite cigar bar. The elated wife-to-be ran around with a flashlight to shine on her ring to make shooting stars for everyone to see. It was pretty annoying, but she had fun!

They could not wait a moment longer to get hitched, so they eloped to Cancun with Mama Travis and their siblings in tow. They knew their friends would be shocked and jealous that they had missed this big event, but Bob and Travis assured them that there would be a Wedding Celebration to share everyone’s blessings.

Both the Nulton and Stewart families proudly embrace their eccentric kinfolk, and Bob and Travis are two apples that fell close to their family trees! New Year’s Eve would be the date, and it would be a wildly unique affair. Guests were invited to celebrate and participate in the Wedding/Casino Party Fundraiser/New Year’s Eve Extravaganza.

Travis and Bob wanted to share their happiness with family and friends and do some good for others in the community. The waterside lawn was covered with a 100 foot tent, dance floor, stage, ceremony chairs and tables for the meals and late night conversation. Hallways were extended from the tent to the Event House and decks to allow the 350+ partygoers to stay dry and cozy in any weather. Guests were encouraged to stay in local hotels and were shuttled to and from Travis Pointe by vans for their convenience (and safety!) after the mega-party.

At 4:00 pm on December 31st, the bride and groom made their entrance to Bonnie Raitt’s Let’s Give ‘Em Something to Talk About. Wearing purple and red costumes, complete with feather boa, Bob and Travis encouraged the uproar of whistles, laughter and “WooHoos” as they glowed with joy at the sight of their loved ones. The ceremony invited guest participation in everything from the color scheme of red and purple to the applause cards for the crowd support of the “I do’s.” Champagne flowed and the fabulous seafood feast catered by Big Daddy’s began. Stories of this crazy wedding are still told fondly in the four counties surrounding Lake Norman.

But that was just the beginning.

The Casino Party lured everyone into the Event House for poker, craps, roulette and more. Instead of gifts, donations were made for the couple’s favorite charities. It didn’t matter who won or lost any game; many new friendships were born at the various tables as friends and family got to know each other.  Another round of appetizers was served to combat the cocktails being enjoyed before the New Year’s Eve Party started at 10:30.

When The Raging Hormones cranked up back in the huge, balloon-filled tent, they had the dance floor covered with their old school blend of rock classics, funky favorites and high school hits for many of the lifelong friends. Bob and Travis were overjoyed as their diverse collections of family and best buddies joined together to relate so many of the tales that linked them all. It felt like a Reunion Celebration as much as a Wedding. As the New Year broke, silly string and cheers exploded everywhere and a few final dances were enjoyed.

When the very last group of tired guests boarded the last van, Bob and Travis knew they had begun a very special journey as husband and wife. They are now excited to share that same sense of fun and adventure as they help you create your own unique event in the natural beauty of Travis Pointe.
